FRANKIE McPHILLIPS - Co. Fermanagh

18th & 19th November 2023

When I tied my first fly, a Black Pennell in September 1976 under the guidance of Ken Ledward, a wonderful Welsh fly tier and gentleman, little did I know that it would lead to a lifetime involved with flies and flytying. I immediately fell in love with both the craft and the materials that go with it.

Within a year I had decided to tie professionally, and for the next twenty, supplied shops all over Ireland with local trout and salmon patterns.

The fly bodies of blended colours were a particular fascination to me and this in turn led me to develop my own range of body dubbings (Traditional Irish Dubbing). After studying many old traditional patterns and colour blends, and with the invaluable guidance of E. J. Malone, an expert fly dresser and Ireland’s leading authority on Irish fly patterns, a range of blended dubbing colours were developed. These blended colours of T.I.D. enable the modern day tier to tie a vast range of authentic flies in the true Irish style

Instructions on Tying a Claret Bumble Trout Fishing Fly

Learn how to tie one of Kingsmill Moore's most popular Bumbles. The Claret Bumble is a great pattern for trout, salmon and sea-trout. I like the claret body hackle to be a medium claret in colour and we tie the body from Traditional Irish Dubbing No.14 Medium Claret. Generally fished top or mid dropper in a team of wet flies.

The Bibio

The Bibio is one of the classic all round wet flies which most anglers will have in their fly box. A great early season fly in smaller sizes for duck fly, it is fished right throughout the year for salmon trout and sea trout.

Green Peter Hairwing

I first tied this pattern with the idea of having a mobile wing and also adding buoyancy to the fly. The deer hair helps it stay in the surface film when fished in a team of wets. It is one of my most popular Green Peter variants.
